The HK79 40mm grenade launcher utilizes grenades for the M203 such as HE, smoke, tear gas, flare, buckshot, etc. and from H&K additional grenades such as hollow-charge fragmentation grenades, dazzle cartridges, rubber pellet loads and training ammunition.
Early in 1990, an order by the Ministry of Defense decreed its introduction, but then reunification came and suddenly the Bundeswehr owned an additional 1.2 million small arms. Unifiying 2 armies that have hardly more than a language in common is so difficult that the DM 2.7 mio. intended for the acquisition of 1 million G11 rifles (numbing figures from a post-Cold War perspective!) had to be spent on reorganizing the East German forces. Its soldiers got HK G3s from West German arsenals; the various Kalashnikov models of the NVA (Nationale Volksarmee, National People's Army) were scrapped or sent to other armies as a gift (believe it or not!). Introduction of the G11 was delayed indefinitely.
