2. Taurus Model PT-945
by John Guynn (mailto:jag@univel.telescan.com)

I picked up my Taurus PT-945 yesterday afternoon. I haven't had a change to take it to a range so I can't comment on it's accuracy or ability to feed 230 gr round nose bullets yet. I did field strip it and looked it over pretty well.

According to the documentation I got with it weighs 30 oz (did not state unloaded or not...I think it's not), has a barrel length of 4.25 inches and a overall length of 7.55 inches.

It does field strip quite quickly and easily. Press in the take down lever stop and rotate the lever 90 degrees and the slide almost falls off the frame. Remove the guide rod and barrel and it's striped. The machining appears to be done well...you can see some machining marks in the slide but over all it's acceptable. The pistol reassembles almost as easily as it comes apart.

I don't have a trigger pull gauge (scale?) so I can't give any real figures but I will say there is some take up in DA mode and quite a bit in SA mode. A little unnerving at first but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Overall the trigger feels smooth. The safety is a little stiff when you engage it (you won't put it on by accident) and very easy to disengage (you may take it off of safe mode by accident). The decock portion of the safety is pretty stiff so you won't decock by accident either. The slide stop is pretty stiff also.

The 8 round factory mag slides in and out of the grip quite well...no harshness can be felt. The mag spring is pretty stiff and it's a bit of a workout to get all 8 rounds in the mag (or get the out manually for that matter). The pistol does not have a magazine disconnecter and will fire with the mag removed.

Overall I feel this pistol will fit my needs/wants quite well. I bought it to be a home defense, carry, target practice (stress therapy) pistol. Without actually firing it yet I can't say if I would recommend it to anyone or not. I have a feeling it will shoot well and straight. After I get it to the range I'll give a report on how it shoots and if it's accurate or not.
