How to disassemble a Glock?

Glock pistols are known for their durability and simple designs. However, for reliable performance, not only the pistol but also the magazines require regular cleaning and maintenance. In this guide, we explain the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly processes valid for all Glock magazine models step by step.

Why Are Glock Magazines Different?

Many pistol magazines (like 1911, Smith & Wesson M&P) come apart easily when the base pin is pressed. Glock magazines have a more secure structure thanks to two plastic locking lugs (ears) that hold the base plate in place. This makes the disassembly process a bit different but certainly not difficult.

Necessary Materials

  • A sturdy punch (Alternatively, a sturdy small screwdriver that fits the hole can be used)
  • A clean cloth
  • Gun oil suitable for polymer and synthetic surfaces
  • Snap caps / dummy rounds for safe testing

Disassembling the Glock Magazine

  1. Place the punch into the hole on the magazine base plate.
  2. Press the punch inward as far as possible. This allows the base plate to disengage from the internal locks.
  3. Slightly squeeze the sides of the magazine and push the base plate down like a lever.
  4. When you hear a “click” sound, the base plate has separated from its locks.
  5. Place your thumb over the base to prevent the spring from flying out.
  6. Remove the base plate completely in a controlled manner.
  7. Then remove the following in order:
    • Magazine spring
    • Follower
  8. The caliber of the magazine is usually written on the Follower (e.g., 9×19 mm).

Glock Magazine Cleaning

Excessive lubrication is not recommended for Glock magazines. The goal is to clean dirt and residue.

  1. Apply a few drops of gun oil to the cloth.
  2. Push the cloth inside the magazine body and clean it a few times.
  3. Wipe the outer surface, then make sure to remove excess oil (you do not want a slippery magazine).
  4. Wipe the magazine spring and follower with the cloth to clean them.
  5. Clean the base plate in the same way and remove excess oil.

Reassembling the Glock Magazine

  1. Place the Follower in the correct direction:
    • Thick part facing the back
    • Small protrusion in the front facing the front of the magazine
  2. Attach the spring to the follower and push it into the magazine.
  3. Push the spring down and slide the base plate back into place.
  4. A “click” sound is heard when the pin sits in its slot and moves up.
  5. The magazine is now ready for use.

Function Test (Very Important)

After maintenance, it is necessary to ensure that the magazine and pistol are working correctly.

  1. Ensure there is no live ammunition.
  2. Load snap caps or dummy rounds into the magazine.
  3. Insert the magazine into the pistol.
  4. Pull the slide firmly and quickly to check that the rounds are fed and ejected properly.
  5. The slide must lock back when the magazine is empty.

This test is one of the safest ways to verify that the magazine and pistol are operating smoothly.
