A rivet is a metal fastener that you can pass through a hole to join two pieces of material. A rivet can be used with plastic or metal. Use a rivet wherever you need a more permanent connection without a nut and bolt. Rivets are available in aluminum, steel, and even plastic.
How to Use a Rivet?
Rivets are produced in both short and long lengths depending on the thickness of the material you are using.
Choose the Right Nosepiece
The diameter of the rivet you use (for example, 1/8 inch) must match the size of the bit (nosepiece) on the gun.
Place the Rivet
Place the rivet into the gun’s nosepiece.
Pass It Through the Hole
Pass the rivet through the holes of the two materials you want to join.
Squeeze
Apply pressure with the tool, squeezing the gun several times until you hear a “pop” sound. That sound indicates the rivet’s mandrel has broken off and the joint has formed.
When the process is complete, you’ll see a smooth, neat surface on the side you’re looking at. The other side (the back) may not look as neat but it will hold the materials firmly together.
Changing the Nosepiece
If you are going to use a rivet of a different size, you need to change the gun’s nosepiece. Most tools include a wrench to remove the existing tip and install the new one.
