In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of passengers arriving at security checkpoints with firearms. For this reason, it is very important for passengers to know how to properly pack their firearms for travel.
The basic rule is that you can travel with a firearm, but your firearm must be completely inaccessible during the flight. You cannot bring the firearm into the cabin (carry-on baggage); therefore, you cannot take it through the security checkpoint. If you pack your firearm properly and declare it to the airline, you can transport it in the aircraft’s cargo hold (checked baggage).
How to fly with a gun?
Get a hard-sided case or box
The first thing you need is a hard-sided carrying case. These cases range from small handgun sizes to large cases suitable for hunting rifles.
- Make sure the case has a hard exterior surface.
- The interior should include foam or padding that keeps the firearm securely in place.
- Tip: Attach a sticker or tape to the outside of the case with your name and phone number written on it. If there is an issue with the packaging, it will be easier for staff to contact you.
Unload the firearm completely
This is the most important step. When preparing for travel, the firearm must be completely unloaded.
- Remove the magazines.
- Make sure there is no round in the chamber.
- Only place a fully unloaded firearm into the case. If you have space in the case and the rules allow it, you can place more than one firearm in the same case.
Package the ammunition properly
Ammunition can be transported in the same case as the firearm, but it must be kept separate from the firearm and secured so it does not roll around inside.
- You can carry ammunition in its original box or in special plastic containers that hold the rounds firmly.
- If the rounds are inside a magazine, ensure the magazine holds the rounds tightly and that they won’t spill out during movement. If there is any risk of spilling, place the rounds in a separate box.
Lock the case
After placing the unloaded firearm and ammunition, close the case and lock it.
- Make sure you use all locking points on the case. No lock hole should be left unused.
Declare it to the airline (during check-in)
When you arrive at the airport, go directly to the airline check-in desk.
- Inform the staff that you are traveling with a firearm.
- You will be given a “firearm declaration form/card.” Fill out this form.
- You will need to place this form inside the firearm case.
- After placing the form inside, lock the case again. You will not see your firearm again until you reach your destination.
Important warning: If you do not declare your firearm, you may face serious problems. If an undeclared firearm (and missing declaration card) is detected during security screening, you may face issues with the airline, receive a fine, or even encounter law enforcement.
Arrival and pickup
When you arrive at your destination, the pickup process may vary depending on how your firearm was packaged. Sometimes you may retrieve it from the airline’s baggage office, and sometimes from the regular baggage carousel.
Tip: If you have space in your suitcase, you can place the locked hard-sided firearm case inside your regular luggage.
Finally, if you are accustomed to carrying a firearm in daily life, you should set that habit aside when traveling, switch into “flight mode,” and strictly follow the rules.
