For tight spaces, smaller jobs, or quick repairs, users can opt for GE brand squeeze tubes, which do not require a caulk gun. The tip of these tubes is cut for use, just like full-size cartridges. However, for larger projects, a cartridge and a caulk gun must be used.
How to load a caulk gun?
The first step in preparing the cartridge is to cut the tip at a 45-degree angle. Some guns offer a special cutting tool for this operation, while others can use a utility knife. Some cartridges have an inner foil; the metal rod found on the guns can be used to puncture this foil. Those without such a rod can perform the same operation with a long nail.
To load the cartridge into the gun, the piston is first retracted by pressing the release trigger/lever on the handle. The cartridge is then inserted rear-end first. It is recommended to squeeze the trigger a few times to dispense a small amount of silicone for testing purposes. This step allows for a more controlled result during application.
After the process is complete, the piston is retracted again by pressing the release trigger/lever, and the cartridge is removed.
